Antonia Jacinto - Fajardo

Antonia Jacinto

Antonia Jacinto Fajardo
(June 13, 1876 - Feb 19, 1966 ?)

Antonia Jacinto was the eldest child of Mariano Jacinto and Victoriana Villareal. The siblings of Antonia include:
* Perfecto
* Felipe
* Atchay
* Tolay
* Bianang
* Maria
* Engracia "Asyang", the youngest of 6 girls

In the Perfecto Jacinto - Trinidad Palma Family Genealogy obtained from one of the descendants, it states Perfecto was born on April 18, 1884 in Amoy, China.

Genealogical information on Perfecto Jacinto can be found on Jacinto-Palma Family Tree.

Antonia's sister, Maria was married to a Roberto de Leon. They had two daughters namely: Pacita "Paz" and Solita. They had an adopted daughter, "Helen".

Could it be that Antonia was also born in China and has Chinese lineage? If you observe the faces of the descendants of Antonia, there is a strong evidence of Chinese features. Antonia passed away at the age of 89.

Is it possible that the Jacinto surname may have been adapted by Mariano Jacinto in 1849 as required by the Claveria Decree? The Jacinto surname is not listed as one of the names in the Catalogo Alfabetico de Apellidos from which native Filipinos are required to choose a name from.

Ancestry.com describes the Jacinto surname as an old name with Spanish and Portuguese origins from the personal name Jacinto. The Latin equivalent is "Hyacinthius" while in Greek, it is "Hyakinthos". It is a name of a saint who was martyred in the 3rd century. The name itself is of pre-Greek origin. It denotes a flower, the martagon lily. The name was "borne by a mythological character from whose blood the flower was supposed to have sprung up". So how did the Spanish name "Jacinto" end up with Mariano Jacinto if he was presumably originating from China?

The children of Antonia Jacinto and Jacobo Fajardo were:
1.1.2.1 Demetrio "Metring" Fajardo married to Encarnacion Goco
1.1.2.2 Angelina "Gely" Fajardo married to Francisco Tongoy Lopez
1.1.2.3 Abelardo "Larding" Fajardo married to Paz Perez
1.1.2.4 Pacita "Titang" Fajardo married to Edgardo Villavicencio
1.1.2.5 Corazon "Chong" Fajardo married to Antonio del Castillo

Here is a piece of interesting information I gathered from Jaime Fajardo, the grandson of Antonia who resided with her in the Sampaloc Ancestral House located near J. Fajardo St. (formerly Lealtad): Antonia Jacinto-Fajardo at one time lived in a big compound on Ylaya Street in Binondo. She together with husband, Jacobo had sponsored as many as 500 Chinese individuals to become Filipino citizens.

Pacita Fajardo-Villavicencio confirmed that they used to live in Ylaya St. in front of the market and her mother, Antonia had two stores in Divisoria. She said that the Ylaya compound was even bigger than the Sampaloc house in Lealtad where they eventually transferred to.

A relative informed me that Antonia spoke several languages including Chinese. But she could not speak English.

Demetrio "Metring" studied at Silliman University at the time when Jacobo Fajardo was assigned in Zamboanga while Abelardo "Larding" studied Agriculture at the UP Los Banos.
